Dear Wine Lover,

Wet! That's the verdict on the weather in Bordeaux this month. Actually we needed some rain badly because the water reserves were rather low. Well this month's rain has solved that problem.

Apart from the weather, May has been an exciting month here in Bordeaux. The Bordeaux Wine Experience has joined The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA) and I will tell you all about this in this Newsletter.

We have just finished a very successful Grand Tour of Bordeaux and we are proud to introduce our new colleague who joined us this month.

Quote of the month:

"At a recent tasting of the wines of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, Eric de Rothschild was asked about his favorite vintage:
'The '59, he answered, if you like young wine."

- The Official Guide to Wine Snobbery,
Leonard S. Bernstein

ASTA
We were present at the annual conference of ASTA, The American Society of Travel Agents. We made the most of our stay in Lyon and had diner at Bocuse. You can read all about our experience in Lyon.

A straw?
Not every change is an improvement. You can read about wine in colored containers with a straw. Call me old fashioned but I prefer my wine out of a bottle...

I hope you'll enjoy reading this Newsletter and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

The May Grand Tour of Bordeaux a great success!

This May we had our first 2008 week wine tour. This Grand Tour of Bordeaux was a great success. This tour had been sold out for a long time. We received an international ensemble of wine lovers from all over the world. We had guests from the USA, Canada, the UK, South Africa and even two sommeliers from Slovenia. We visited and tasted at all five First Growths and Yquem. The meals at the Michelin rated restaurants Saint James, Le Chapon Fin and the Hostellerie de Plaisance (2 stars!) were all excellent and all different experiences. We tasted a record number of wines on this tour, thanks partly to David and Janez, our two sommeliers from Slovenia who brought some very interesting wines from Slovenia. For the farewell dinner at Chateau Coulon Laurensac they brought a Slovenian wine for each Bordeaux wine I took from my cellar; except for the Mouton Rothschild. You can see all the wines tasted on this tour by clicking here.

The Bordeaux Wine Experience keeps growing: Introducing our new colleague

Our new assistant Laura Black Our new assistant Laura Black in front of Chateau Coulon Laurensac

So many activities and so little time. The Bordeaux Wine Experience has been growing steadily over the last few years. To facilitate a further growth and to help us increase our level of professionalism we needed more support. That's why we are happy to introduce our new assistant Laura Black. Born and educated in France by English parents, Laura is fluent in both English and French. She has an extensive international experience having lived in Brunei, Spain and Thailand. Laura has a degree in international commerce and holds the DUAD wine tasting diploma from the prestigious Bordeaux Faculty of Oenology. She combines a passion for traveling and wine with an experience in organizing wine tours in the Bordeaux region.
Welcome aboard Laura, both Margaret and I look forward to working with you.

ASTA, The American Society of Travel Agents organizes each year a unique event which this year took place in Lyon. Travel professionals from all over the world gathered at ASTA's International Destination Expo (IDE) to enhance their knowledge on France, this year's host country, its culture and attractions. For five days, nearly 1,000 travel professionals from 47 countries, gathered to learn about the culture, attractions and travel business of the city often referred to as “the gateway to Europe.” Only in Lyon focused primarily

on French and Western European niche travel. The Bordeaux Wine Experience just had to be present at this event. All events, seminars and educational courses took place at the Lyon Convention Center where we had a booth at the trade show. ASTA's IDE is an annual gathering of travel industry professionals, seeking to immerse themselves in the culture, food and sightseeing of a unique destination, with the purpose of educating their clients about the region. Among delegates, 62 percent hailed from North America, 14 percent from France with the remaining 24 percent from countries Bocuse, detail plateas far away as Brazil, Fiji and beyond. "ASTA's IDE is the only industry event dedicated to destination training," said Cheryl Hudak, CTC, ASTA president and CEO. We were proud to meet her at The Bordeaux Wine Experience stand at the trade show. The Bordeaux Wine Experience is looking forward to working with travel agents from all over the world to communicate our beautiful wine region and our exciting wine tours.

Our Lyon culinary Experience

Margaret with her cooking idol Paul Bocuse in Lyon Margaret with her cooking idol
Paul Bocuse in Lyon

When in Rome, do as the Romans. This saying for applied for us to Lyon as well. We had to pay tribute to the uncontested master of French cuisine, Paul Bocuse who has been consecrated "chef of the century" by the Michelin guide. As we are only human we had to eat at this restaurant. We decided to remain traditional. Margaret had a soup made of frog legs and I had three varieties of foie gras. Both were delicious. For our main dish we both had the tournedos Rossini (steak with seared foie gras) with a "sauce Périgeux" covered with chunks of black truffle. Too much and too delicious. We fell for the cheese platter and it was to die for (we almost did). The dessert was everything they had. Four tables were rolled against ours and were filled with every possible dessert. We could choose what ever we wanted. Of course we choose too many but is was just so finger licking good. I can say that I have been at some great restaurants, but this was without doubt the best meal I have ever had. Bravo Monsieur Bocuse! Bravo, bravo, bravo!

The Best Bordeaux :

All right, all right, another dinner party story. Again we were invited to a dinner party with personal friends and Chateau owners in Saint Emilion. The dinner at Chateau Laniote was marvelous. The company was even better. We tasted some great white wines from that other wine producing region beginning with a B.
For the cheese we had to work again for our living. The wine was served decantered and we had to find the appellation and the vintage. D
efinitely Bordeaux was our conclusion and definitely right bank. A very delicate evolved wine with the color turning towards orange and brown. Definitely not a young wine.
Merlot, lots of merlot, we all agreed. Licorice, mushroom and truffles we found in the aroma. A fragile, delicious wine like I have never tasted before. It turned out to be a Chateau La Conseillante 1945!
This extraordinary bottle came from our host's cellar. His parents had been given it as a wedding present in the late 1940's. It had remained in their cellar ever since and had never been moved. We were honored that Arnaud and Florence would share such an unique and special bottle with us.
Chateau La Conseillante 1945
This dinner took place on May 7th, thus on the eve of May 8, the day when France celebrates the end of the Second World War. It was a moving moment tasting a bottle of wine that had been produced in 1945.
A very special and memorable experience; thank you very much Arnaud and Florence.

The best "non Bordeaux" wine:

I have a preference for Bordeaux wines. This doesn't mean that we only drink Bordeaux. One of my favorite "foreign" wines is in the Rioja appellation in Spain. If Bordeaux is my first love in wine, Rioja definitely is my second love. In an excellent local restaurant in Spain, we found one of my favorite Rioja's: La Rioja Alta. We choose the Gran Reserva 904 from the vintage 1995.
The Bordeaux Wine Experience recommends this La Rioja Alta
The color showed a ruby color with hints of tile red. On the nose we found intense, penetrating and complex aromas with overtones of spices, leather and ripe fruit. In the mouth, strong flavored yet round and silky with good balance between fruit and acidity. The aftertaste was complex and persistent with hints of licorice.

Another exciting discovery was a sweet white wine from Slovenia , a Simcic Leonardo 2003, brought to us by two of our guests from the May Tour.
Simcic Leonardo 2003
This is a wine made from sun dried grapes (Rebale grape variety) with the color of a 20 year old Sauternes. It had a delightful nose of raisins and orange blossom. A very rich texture with strong flavors of butter, caramel and butterscotch. A delicious and rare wine of which there are only 1,330 bottles produced.

Bordeaux with a straw, what's next?

Bordeaux with a straw!

Tandem wine, packaged in shiny recyclable Tetra Pak cartons, is being tested in Belgian supermarkets by Bordeaux négociant Cordier Mestrezat.
Tetra Pak already makes a carton for Burgundy-based producer Boisset, whose French Rabbit range of Cabernet Sauvignon and other red blends, in jaunty colored containers, was launched in 2005.
This latest version of the ubiquitous container is in an easy-drinking format. The red, white and rosé wines, priced at €1.25, come with a special straw

with four holes around a sealed top that send individual streams of wine onto the tongue, recreating the sensation of drinking from a glass. The company reports sales of 1,000 units a week in Belgium, and plans to launch Tandem in France and Canada early next year.

If this really takes on we won’t be needing a corkscrew or a glass any more.
