The Grand Tour at First Growth Chateau Latour Rain in September: Guests of the Grand Tour
at First Growth Chateau Latour

Dear Wine Lover,
It has been a strange summer in Bordeaux. Last Saturday it rained like we were supposed to drown. On sunday we had lunch beside the pool and the boys even went for a swim... That pretty much sums up our 2008 summer. You can read my preliminary ideas on the 2008 vintage in this Newsletter..

Some other highlights:

Food, wonderful food
Our tours are as much a culinary experience as a wine tour. Guests of our September Grand Tour raved about the food we had. Here's a quote from one of our guests: "I came with high expectations, but that the food was this good we hadn't realised. It exceeded our expectations by far. You should emphasize more on this being an unique culinary experience as well ". So I have asked Margaret to tell you more about the food part. As she is very knowledgeable about food and cooking, she chooses the menus for all our tours. I just get to eat it...

Quote of the month:

“Not all men who drink wine are poets. Some of us drink because we aren't poets."

- Anonymous

In the coming Newsletters Margaret will tell you about the "food part" of the Bordeaux Wine Experience. In this one she tells you about one of the best (bistro) restaurants in the world (and one of my favorites!): La Tupina in Bordeaux.

The Bordeaux Wine Experience at Chateau Coulon LaurensacThe 2008 vintage, still a bit early in the race

The harvest will start much later than usual and it's going to be a wine maker's vintage. Chateaux have had to use every trick in the book to save the 2008 vintage.

Troplong Mondot

Christne Valette in the old chai
Christne Valette in the old chai

I spoke to Christine Valette this morning. This charming and very knowledgeable owner of Saint Emilion First Growth Troplong Mondot told me about her problems. They had to clip off the leaves on both sides of the bunches and they even had to cut off a large part of them. This was all done to aerate the remaining bunches and to prevent rot. Madame Valette told me that her grapes were in good condition but she needed the weather to stay sunny. The weather forecast for the coming week is good. Nevertheless Troplong Mondot has decided to harvest late. The chateau is renovating its wine-making facilities. Madame Valette asked me if I knew what it was like to have work done in France. I didn't know if I had to laugh or cry, because yes I knew what she meant. Let's just say that she is lucky the harvest will be late this year. Almost as late as her work men will be with her new chai...

Cheval Blanc

Even Cheval Blanc wants some sunshine Even Cheval Blanc wants some sunshine

Although the exceptional Saint Emilion First Growth Cheval Blanc faces the same challenges as all the other properties, they are more optimistic. Their new chef de culture, the person who looks after the vines, has taken a new approach.
Nicolas Corporandy
has changed a lot in the vineyard. He has changed the height of the the vines' supports. They are grown higher and have a better leaf surface ratio. This accounts for a better photosynthesis and for a better nourishments for the berries. This accounts for more sugar and a better quality of the grapes. Especially in cooler and wetter vintages this is an advantage. The 2008 grapes are therefore amongst the healthiest of the appellation. But even Cheval Blanc is hoping for a few weeks of sun...

The Bordeaux Wine Experience at Chateau Coulon LaurensacMore than a Wine Experience (by Margaret Rens)

On our tours like in this newsletter we focus a lot on wine. But for me a good glass of wine tastes even better with a good meal. If paired correctly, the flavors in the wine enhance the dish and vice versa. That is why on our tours we put a lot of effort in composing the menus for your Bordeaux Wine Experience. As one of our guests put it in her guest comment on the last tour: "it should be The Bordeaux Wine and Gourmet Experience!" On our tours we will tempt your palate not only with premium wines, but also with a variety of different dishes and different styles of restaurants.

Traditional French Cuisine

Jean-Pierre Xiradakis La Tupina's Jean-Pierre Xiradakis

On some other tours on the market you will dine at the same venue several times, but we have a different aim. On our tours our aim is to give you the opportunity to experience the best food France has to offer. Different meals by diffrent chefs each day!
The south west of France is renowned for its cuisine. The region and its capital Bordeaux boast a rich history of recipes and culinary traditions.
One of the best examples of the culinary heritage of the South West France cuisine is the restaurant La Tupina in Bordeaux. This restaurant has become a benchmark for traditional cuisine. In our tours it is often a favorite for many of our guests.
Chef Jean-Pierre Xiradakis cooks in honor of the recipes of his grandmother. Here you won't find a large list of ingredients painted together in a colorful picture on your plate.

Dinner prepared in the open fire

The kitchen is honest and straight forward. Only the best of ingredients have the right to pass the restaurants threshold.
Jean Pierre can often be found on one of the many colorful markets in Bordeaux picking out the fresh produce for his guests later that day.
Foie gras paired with Sauternes, home made French fries cooked in duck fat over the open fire. Hard to leave room for Jean Pierre’s famous selection of deserts!

The best improve with age...

The Best Bordeaux :

Our Tours always conclude with the Farewell Dinner at our home, Chateau Coulon Laurensac. It is always a very memorable experience, with several Grand Cru wines. With the dessert we tasted the King of Wines and the Wine of Kings. A Chateau d'Yquem of over ten years old! This September it was the Chateau d'Yquem 1995. As we had tasted the 2004 during the tour it was interesting to be able to compare a younger vintage with this thirteen year old one. This bottle had been aging for many years in my cellar.

Chateau d'Yquem 1995

The wine was light golden. We found classic botrytis, pure and intense, acacia honey with pear and pineapple. Furthermore an “oily” texture with great depth and nuance richness. It showed gorgeous length and long aftertaste. This is a truly splendid wine, which can spend 15-25 years more in the cellar.
The good news is that I still have a few cases in my cellar...

Our fellow tasters
Our September Grand Tour consisted of a mixed group: four couples from the USA (New Jersey, California and Maine) and a couple from Singapore.
We tasted a record number of 70 wines of which 44 were Classified Growths!. Click here to see all wines we tasted!

The best "non-Bordeaux" wine:

Our guest often bring a wine from "their own"region to the Farewell Dinner. It is a unique experience to be able to compare Bordeaux's with some great non-Bordeaux's. On our September Tour two couples brought Californian wines for us to taste. Wines we won't be able to find in France and wine we enjoyed tasting tremendously. Jody and Noel from Babcock 1999 FathomCalifornia had brought a Babcock 1999 Fathom from Santa Barbara. This is a wine in a traditional Bordeaux blend. This wine has bright fruit, huge color extraction and a long finish. Velvety textures roll off the tongue and are greeted with aromas of violets and currants. A very interesting discovery.

Sandy and Albert from California had brought a Justin Isocelles 2001. Again a Bordeaux blend on our tasting table.
Justin Isocelles 2001
The wine had a brilliant ruby color. The layers of aromas appear as this wine evolves in the glass. Toasted oak, pencil lead, and caramel combine with cherry, black currant and earthy components on the nose. The wine showed a delicate balance of acidity and medium bodied tannins.

So many more...
We don't have enough room to talk about all the wines we tasted, but we do want to thank all our guests for taking the trouble of bringing wine to this tasting dinner. Thank you all very much.
