Margaret and Ronald with Anthony Robbins in Rome
Tony Robbins: "I really would like to visit Bordeaux sometime, and I don't even drink wine!”

Dear Wine Lover,

Life is great, let's not forget that, and with excellent wines it's even better!
I hope your summer was as wonderful as ours. A lot of good things happened: TheBordeauxWineBlog is ranked number 1 in the world, thanks to your support.
The 2009 vintage is improving even further in barrels as we speak. I have tasted the Chateau Pontet Canet 2009 again last week and this possible 100 pointer was even better than I remembered.
Another 100 pointer was meeting Tony Robbins in Rome. Although he doesn't touch alcohol he was very positive about the beautiful Bordeaux region.

The 2010 vintage is looking very good. I have tasted the berries at Latour and Lafite and man, are they sweet. The weather has been great so far. You can read my first comments on this vintage in this edition.

Between all the good things there was some sad news as well: We were saddened by the loss of Thierry Manoncourt of First Growth Figéac. This grand old man of Saint Emilion passed away at the age of almost 93 years old.

Quote of the month:

"If God had wanted to prohibit drinking, would He have made the wine that good? "

- Cardinal de Richelieu
(and Ronald on the 2009)

The Bordeaux Wine Experience at Chateau Coulon LaurensacThe Vintage 2010, a preview

Philippe Dhalluin of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild: "Today I am very happy with the 2010, but of course we're not at the harvest yet."

It has been very dry in Bordeaux this summer that is why the rain we had last week was most welcome. Let's keep our fingers crossed because the quality of the 2010 vintage still depends on the weather for a few weeks. So far it looks like the 2010 is another great vintage in the making.
Some of the First Growths expect an earlier harvest than usual. The rainfall in August has been less than 10% of what we usually get. We find ourselves with concentrated berries with a lot of sugar. Theoretically this could lead to high alcohol degrees. Some people are already comparing the 2010 vintage with the heat wave vintage of 2003. Wine making director Philippe Dhalluin of First Growth Chateau Mouton-Rothschild is not afraid of high alcohol wines in Pauillac: "With the Cabernet Sauvignon we are never higher than 13 or 13,5 percent in alcohol. It is not an issue for us and I am very confident."

The La Mission Haut Brion whites 2010 is being brought into the winery The La Mission Haut Brion white 2010 is being brought into the winery: "We feel very confident of the quality".

On the Grand Tour of September we were at La Mission Haut Brion while they were harvesting the whites. As we could see (and taste) the quality of the grapes was very good. Our guests can vouch for the dedication and care that was being applied in their aim of achieving an outstanding quality. The grapes made their short trip from the vineyard to the winery in air conditioned vehicles. I look already forward to tasting this wine "en primeur".

The Bordeaux Wine Experience at Chateau Coulon LaurensacThierry Manoncourt of Chateau Figéac passed away

We were saddened by the loss of Thierry Manoncourt of First Growth Figéac. This grand old man of Saint Emilion passed away at the age of almost 93 years old.

Thierry Manoncourt, with in the background the Figéac 1995 with on the label the 50 vintages produced by him Thierry Manoncourt, with in the background the Figéac 1995 with on it's label the 50 vintages produced by him up to that year

I remember Monsieur Manoncourt as the ever gracious host at his beautiful chateau which has been in his family since 1892, and which he began managing in 1946. Manoncourt was never pretentious and always had this twinkle in his eyes. Like when he told me his secret to a long and healthy life: "you have to remain active and drink wine regularly, preferably Figéac".
The funeral took place at the collegiate church in Saint Emilion. I have never seen this church so packed. A large crowd of more than 1000 mourners of neighboring winemakers, courtiers and wine merchants came to pay their last respects and those who arrived late had to stand during the funeral.

Manoncourt always had an open mind. He was one of the founder members of the Union des Grand Crus and very active in the Jurade of Saint Emilion. He insisted on numerous occasions that this Jurade was not just a brotherhood but a professional society promoting the wines from Saint Emilion. He was actively involved in the creation of the Saint Emilion classification in the 1950s.
I remember asking him about his opinion when Figéac wasn’t allowed to join Cheval Blanc and Ausone as Grand Cru Classé A, back in 2006. He showed no signs of any grudge, knowing Figéac’s application was not rejected on grounds of quality but on price.

Thierry Manoncourt teaches Ronnie KoleThierry Manoncourt teaches Ronnie Kole to end a concert with a bang!

Manoncourt was never afraid to change his course. The grape varieties planted at Figéac are 70% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. He felt it was more suitable to the gravely terroir. Not afraid of technology, he was the third Bordeaux chateau to introduce stainless steel tanks.

His playfulness showed again at the end of the dinner at Angélus at Vinexpo 2009. Pianist Ronnie Kole was giving a recital.
I will always remember how Manoncourt, tuxedo and all, finished this concert with his foot on the grand piano.

Manoncourt leaves his wife, Marie-France, four children and 14 grandchildren. Chateau Figéac is currently managed by his daughter Laure along with her husband Eric d’Aramon.
Manoncourt is buried in the cemetery of Saint Emilion.

Your Tour host and Bordeaux Wine Expert and Wine Writer: Ronald Rens, M. Sc., Wine Master The Bordeaux Wine Experience at Chateau Coulon LaurensacWhat Ronald has been drinking this month...

The best improve with age...

The Best Bordeaux:

Guests on our week tours are invited to bring a bottle of wine from "their part of the world" to share with us on the "farewell dinner". And we had another two great bottles I would like to tell you about.
In July we received a group from Macau. As they don't grow wine there, these guests brought a beautiful bottle of Chateau La Fleur Petrus 1982.

Chateau La Fleur Petrus 1982.
This extraordinary wine showed an exceptional complex nose with notes of spice, and blackberry. The wine had subtle aroma's of prune, blackberry and coffee and some spices.
This 1982 was absolutely ready to drink. 28 years of cellaring brought out the best. If you have this wine in your cellar, my advise would be to start drinking it. Or wait a bit and invite me over. I would love to taste this great wine again.
Thank you very much Alex and Regina for sharing this great wine with us.
Gan bei! (Cheers in Chinese).
Again a truly memorable night and a unique Bordeaux Wine Experience!

The best "non Bordeaux" wine:

Bordeaux tends to be a bit chauvinistic so it is difficult to find wines from other countries here. That's why we enjoy tasting wines from all over the world at the Farewell dinner. This time it was a wine from Napa. The Chateau Montelena from the Historic Napa Valley winery known for elegant, age-worthy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and the Chardonnay that won the 1976 Paris Tasting.
Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2002
We tasted the Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 from the Napa Valley. The appearance of the wine was surprisingly youthful, with an opaque ruby robe. The nose is clean, and opened to show a very intense bouquet of cedar, black currants, coriander and some anise.
Wow, this is really a full-bodied wine with medium acidity, well-integrated alcohol and big sweet tannins. This wine was open to taste now and was a perfect match for food. Properly cellared we all felt that it could age for another five to ten years.
Thank you John and Nancy for introducing this wonderful wine to us.

The Bordeaux Wine Experience at Chateau Coulon LaurensacThe Bordeaux Wine Experience supports the Anthony Robbins Foundation

Margaret and I were in Rome this June to attend a seminar by Tony Robbins. Participating in this event really changed the way we look at things and beware: our tours will never be the same again. My presentation of on our Wine Tours was always far from boring, but now you've ain 't seen nothing yet. Read here how our guests experienced our recent tours!
On this seminar we were both touched by the way Tony gives back to society. We decided to actively support his foundation and I would like to tell you about this unique organization. The Anthony Robbins Foundation was created to empower those often forgotten by society: youth, elderly, disabled, prisoners and homeless. Tony started the Foundation after he shared his Basket Brigade story at his events and started receiving donations to support the cause. The International Basket Brigade is the founding program and the Foundation serves as a resource center for coordinators from around the globe every year.

Please do like us and and help Tony helping others by supporting The Anthony Robbins Foundation
"The secret of living is giving"

Another one of the Foundation’s major focuses is on the youth. They are hosting a Global Youth Leadership Summit. This Summit is an amazing 5-day program that brings kids age 14-17 together from all around the world to experience a 5-day immersion event that includes team building activities, wonderful speakers, confidence building activities and a focus on the importance of philanthropy.

Recently this Foundation launched a homeless support project in San Diego county. They are awarding several local homeless support organizations with donations (totaling just over 100k) for the 2010 year. This is just an outline of several major programs but there is more. You can find more information at www.anthonyrobbinsfoundation.org.
