Dear Wine Lover, Life is great, let's not forget that, and with excellent wines it's even better! The 2010 vintage is looking very good. I have tasted the berries at Latour and Lafite and man, are they sweet. The weather has been great so far. You can read my first comments on this vintage in this edition. Between all the good things there was some sad news as well: We were saddened by the loss of Thierry Manoncourt of First Growth Figéac. This grand old man of Saint Emilion passed away at the age of almost 93 years old.

It has been very dry in Bordeaux this summer that is why the rain we had last week was most welcome. Let's keep our fingers crossed because the quality of the 2010 vintage still depends on the weather for a few weeks. So far it looks like the 2010 is another great vintage in the making.
On the Grand Tour of September we were at La Mission Haut Brion while they were harvesting the whites. As we could see (and taste) the quality of the grapes was very good. Our guests can vouch for the dedication and care that was being applied in their aim of achieving an outstanding quality. The grapes made their short trip from the vineyard to the winery in air conditioned vehicles. I look already forward to tasting this wine "en primeur".
We were saddened by the loss of Thierry Manoncourt of First Growth Figéac. This grand old man of Saint Emilion passed away at the age of almost 93 years old.
I remember Monsieur Manoncourt as the ever gracious host at his beautiful chateau which has been in his family since 1892, and which he began managing in 1946. Manoncourt was never pretentious and always had this twinkle in his eyes. Like when he told me his secret to a long and healthy life: "you have to remain active and drink wine regularly, preferably Figéac". Manoncourt always had an open mind. He was one of the founder members of the Union des Grand Crus and very active in the Jurade of Saint Emilion. He insisted on numerous occasions that this Jurade was not just a brotherhood but a professional society promoting the wines from Saint Emilion. He was actively involved in the creation of the Saint Emilion classification in the 1950s.
Manoncourt was never afraid to change his course. The grape varieties planted at Figéac are 70% Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. He felt it was more suitable to the gravely terroir. Not afraid of technology, he was the third Bordeaux chateau to introduce stainless steel tanks. His playfulness showed again at the end of the dinner at Angélus at Vinexpo 2009. Pianist Ronnie Kole was giving a recital. Manoncourt leaves his wife, Marie-France, four children and 14 grandchildren. Chateau Figéac is currently managed by his daughter Laure along with her husband Eric d’Aramon.
Margaret and I were in Rome this June to attend a seminar by Tony Robbins. Participating in this event really changed the way we look at things and beware: our tours will never be the same again. My presentation of on our Wine Tours was always far from boring, but now you've ain 't seen nothing yet. Read here how
our guests experienced our recent tours!
Another one of the Foundation’s major focuses is on the youth. They are hosting a Global Youth Leadership Summit. This Summit is an amazing 5-day program that brings kids age 14-17 together from all around the world to experience a 5-day immersion event that includes team building activities, wonderful speakers, confidence building activities and a focus on the importance of philanthropy.
