Dear Wine Lover,

"A Cava a day keeps the doctor away" at Victor Montes in Bilbao

Ronald and Margaret cheating on Bordeaux with a glass of Cava in Bilbao, Spain

What an exciting time of year this is. Spring is in the air in Bordeaux with the promise of another summer and another vintage on its way. And we're just rounding off an extensive renovation of some of the guestrooms at our Chateau Coulon Laurensac. We now offer a room for single travelers as well.

Tasting the 2010 "on Futures"
This En Primeur week or futures tastings, is one big event with tastings, lunches and dinner parties. And we will be there in full swing. In my Bordeaux Vintage Special, the upcoming issue of this Magazine, we will tell you all about it and about the quality of the new vintage of course. In this issue Margaret already reveals some details in her 2010 Vintage Sneak Preview.

Quote of the month:

"Good wine is a necessity of life for me "

- Thomas Jefferson

Cheating on Bordeaux
We have been cheating on Bordeaux again. You can read our experiences in the Spanish Basque country, more specifically in Bilbao. This buzzing city makes for a great extension after on of our Bordeaux Wine Tours, which are quickly selling out by the way. (See the Bordeaux Wine Tour Schedule for the last spots for the upcoming season).

I ask for your feedback
We came a long way since our first issue of this magazine back in 2006. Our Bordeaux WIne Magazine with almost 23.000 subscribers, has become the the fastest growing independent publication specializing on Bordeaux, culinary experiences and premium wines. So we must be doing something right, but we can always do better. To help us improve I would like to ask your input. Tell us how we're doing, how you feel we can improve. Is this Newsletter too short, too long? What kind of articles do you like and which ones do you like less and why. Please contact me directly at (Ronald@BXWINEX.com) and tell us how we can improve. I look forward to hear from you.

We would love to welcome you at our Chateau for a great Bordeaux Wine Tour

I hope you'll enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed writing it and I would love to get that feedback from you. (Ronald@BXWINEX.com).

In the mean time: Don’t drink anything I wouldn't drink!

Cheers from Bordeaux,

The Bordeaux Wine Experience at Chateau Coulon LaurensacBordeaux 2010: A sneak preview!

the En Primeurs tastingsAll of Bordeaux is in anticipation of the En Primeurs tastings that take place the first week of April. We are also very anxious to taste what the 2010 have become. Because we stayed in France last year’s summer vacation and spend a good part of 2010’s summer in Bordeaux we know that we can expect exceptional wines.
The 2010 summer was very hot right from the start in June. July and August recorded 534 sun hours, some 50 hours above the average. This was combined with a lack of rain: in these two months only 32mm fell, against an average of 114mm.
For our grass this was great. It saved Laurent (our gardener) a lot of time on the lawn mower to keep our 12 acres in shape.
Tasting the 2010 vintage in BordeauxBut this lack of rain is quite different from what we experienced in 2005 or even 2009. In these years at least we experienced the odd shower. The grapes of 2010 were therefore relatively small and concentrated. The cool nights fortunately helped to develop the freshness and acidity.
Luckily for the wine makers August was relatively cool as was September. This allowed the acidity in the wines to be even better preserved. Expectations for the brand new 2010 vintage in Bordeaux are very high. Some sources told me that the 2010 will be as good if not greater then much hailed 2009 vintage.
The Bordeaux harvest 2010I spoke to several Negociants (wine merchants) recently and one of them told me that 2010 is a classic Bordeaux with a less ripe and powerful style than vintages like 2009, 2005 or 2003. He was not willing to give me a hint of what he thought the prices will do in comparison to the 2009. My guess is that, if we’re lucky, they’ll be around the same level, but it could very well be even higher. The chateaux in Bordeaux have been doing excellent business these last few years and I have seen no indications that they will offer more reasonable pricing for 2010. You may therefore consider buying some 1988, 1989 and 1990 if you can find them. This was a similar row of 3 great vintages following one another. Modestly called by the French: Les Trois Glorieuses, meaning something like the Three Glorious Ones. These wines offer the advantage of having more then 20 years of aging under their belt. And compared to the Trois Glorieuses of this century (2008, 2009 and now possibly 2010), they might even seem affordable. The problem is to find someone that is prepared to sell them to you.

Margaret with Florence Cathiard of Smith Haut Lafitte, who will host the dinner on April 4

We’ll kick off the En Primeur week on April 4th in Pomerol. Here we start with a vertical tasting and a luncheon at Chateau La Conseillante. That night we will attend the Press dinner at Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte in the Pessac-Léognan.
The following days we’ll work our way through more then 150 classified Growths of Medoc, Pessac-Léognan, St. Emilion and Sauternes. On April 9th we leave for a well earned vacation in Spain. To give our taste buds some rest or maybe something different to work with.
It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it…

Fun at Chateau Yquem..

Fun at Chateau Yquem...

If you want to experience the best Bordeaux has to offer, our Grand Tour has it all. There are just a few spots left for the May and July tours. And we are proud to announce that finally we have been able to add one single room to our tours! If you have a hard time to find a traveling partner to come with you to explore the vineyards of Bordeaux you can now book this single room. And the good news is that there is no single supplement. But you have to act fast because there is only one single room available per tour.

New friends

New friends enjoying an exceptional meal

Whether you’re traveling with someone else or alone, once you arrive at our chateau you will quickly feel at home in the small group of your fellow travelers. Our Tours are small group tours. In this small group you’ll meet interesting people from all over the world and even make new friends. Our group tours are different because they are both small and exclusive. There is a maximum of 6 couples and one single per tour. That is just you and 5 other couples! We have received people from the world of finance, education and the medical professions. We had guests who were CEO's, real estate agents, airplane pilots and entrepreneurs, both active and retired.

Fellow Wine Lovers

The Bordeaux Harvest tour "at work"

The age of The Bordeaux Wine Experience travelers, generally ranges from early to mid-30's up to late-50's and early 60’s. Until now we have had people in an age range from 25 to 80 years. All have a common interest in travel, food and wine and all the good things of life. And we had a lot of fun with them. For us great wines and great food are all about sharing and enjoying with others and our guests always agree. It makes your experience so much more interesting when you share what you taste with fellow wine lovers. There is also some down time as there are nights where you’ll have dinner without the group. This way you’ll have some private time to spend with your traveling partner. By the way, we have some twin bedded rooms available as well. This way you can also travel with for example your father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister or a friend.

The main lobby in Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao

The main lobby in Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao

On aim is to create unique Bordeaux Wine Experiences. Sometimes people even want more. Most of our guests start their European trip in Paris. Who wouldn't want to spend some days in Paris? They then take either a plane or a train to Bordeaux for our Bordeaux Wine Tours. Guests often ask us what we would suggest as an extension of their stay as they are in Europe.
In this Bordeaux Wine Magazine I will provide you with suggestions to extend your stay in our beautiful region. We have personally test driven these extensions for you, so we know what we are talking about. This month my suggestion will be Spanish: Buzzing Bilbao. Next time the focus will be on Relaxing Rioja, the famous wine region in Spain.

Buzzing Bilbao

"A bath with a view" in Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao

"A bath with a view" in Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao

You reach Bilbao in a little over three hours by car from Bordeaux. We stayed there right in front of the Guggenheim Museum in the Gran Hotel Domine, the five star flagship of the Silken hotel group. Our room has a two-seater bath tub, designed by Philippe Starck. From this tub you have a view on the Guggenheim with its weird architecture. Everywhere in the hotel you find attractive artwork by Mariscal, a Spanish artist living and working in Barcelona. The Spanish have a thing with architecture and Gran Hotel Domine is no exception. The main lobby is constructed with curved lines around a kind of stone dome dominating the center of this building. I realize it is difficult to picture this but it all works together to create an open and welcoming atmosphere.

Great food

"A Cava a day keeps the doctor away" at Victor Montes in Bilbao

"A Cava a day keeps the doctor away"
at Victor Montes in Bilbao

Bilbao is not just famous for its architecture but is also renowned for its tapas, small local dishes. According to our concierge Victor Montes serves the best tapas, right in the heart of the buzzing old town. Over a glass of Cava, as the Spanish champagne is called, we concur with our concierge’s verdict. There are a lot of Spanish around and they certainly know how to enjoy themselves. Life is good in Spain. That night we dine in the minimalist but intimate Beltz the Black restaurant. For hotel guests the wine is free, a nice touch. The meal is both original and excellent. And at a mere € 38 a great value!

American influence

"A bath with a view" in Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao The Guggenheim by night seen from the rooftop
terrace of the Gran Hotel Domine

Breakfast is served on the rooftop terrace with an incredible view of the Guggenheim Museum next door. After checking out we’re off to the Guggenheim, the incredible creation of the American Architect Frank O. Gehry. I read somewhere that the museum looks like a child has been fooling around with some tinfoil in the dark. Anyhow, this construction in titanium and marble is more than intriguing. American artist Jeff Koons contributed as well: Right next to the entrance a giant puppy, made of flowering plants, looks down on us as we walk up to the museum. The exhibition is a bit too much for our taste but we enjoy our walk through this unique building very much.
After a very good lunch in the museum’s restaurant (again with a bottle of free wine) we’re off. In an hour and a half we will reach Gehry’s other famous creation in one of Spain’s most famous wine regions: La Rioja. As this is a destination by itself, I will tell you next time about this part of our trip.
