Dear wine lover,
Coulon Laurensac in the mistIt has been both a cold and a hot autumn here in France. The temperature (weather) has been very low with some mornings of - 7 C (23 F).
The high temperature of course was caused by the strikes against President Sarkozy's pension reform plans. Fortunately for you, strikes like that usually happen in November so for our wine tours there are normally no problems.

Chateau Coulon Laurensac in the mist

People who run the trains in France, in the old days used to work under very unpleasant circumstances (i.e. shoveling coal etc.). That's why they used to be entitled to retire very early with almost a double pension. Nowadays train drivers sit on comfortable chairs and press a button every now and again. The newly elected President Sarkozy thought this special pension break wasn't justified anymore. Of course the train drivers disagreed and decided to strike. We'll see where it will end.

You, on the other hand didn't strike: You were a great help with bringing on new subscribers to this Newsletter. And your support by voting for our Blog was overwhelming. In this edition you can read the results.

Quote of the month:

"Terroir is like a musical instrument.
Unless you know how to make use of it, it's useless"

Nicolas Joly
in Decanter Magazine

We have changed the look of our website so I invite you to have a look at it and tell me what you think (Ronald@BXWINEX.com). The wine trivia question has been changed as well. From this edition on you can see whether you know the answer by clicking on the link because the answer will be there already. The downside is you can't win prizes any more...
For this month's wine trivia question I again ask you to recognize a bottle from my own personal wine cellar but this time it is an older bottle.

And I have added a new item; my comments on some wines I have been drinking. Like Michael Broadbent does in Decanter Magazine, I give you my best and my worst experiences. I would love to hear your comments if you ever tasted these wines.
Please let me know at Ronald@BXWINEX.com.

Fortunately the Saint Emilion Classification has been reinstalled. This didn't happen as an early Christmas present. It was a heavily debated court decision. More about this you can read in this Newsletter. Speaking of Christmas, a Wine Tour to Bordeaux is the perfect present for a wine lover. You can offer a wine tour through a beautiful gift voucher. It is a great gift for your spouse because you will of course be accompanying him or her!

I hope you'll enjoy reading this Newsletter and I hope hearing from you soon.

With our best wishes and seasons greetings!

Don’t drink anything I wouldn't drink!

With our best wishes and seasons greetings!

Ronald and Margaret wish you all the best
for the upcoming holiday season

Cheval Blanc and Ausone and Angelus remain Classified Growths
Still a First Growth: Cheval BlancThe Saint Emilion Classification applies again now that a Paris court has ruled that its suspension had no legal justification. In our April Newsletter
we explained what happened.
Basically there were four chateaux that were not happy to be demoted in the review of the Saint Emilion Classification, which take place every 10 years.
The chateaux that created the entire mess were:
Chateau La Tour de Pin Figeac
Chateau Cadet Bon
Chateau Guadet and
Chateau de la Marzelle
Ausone, possibly the best of the First GrowthsThese four chateaux went to court and the judge decided to annul the entire classification. The French appellation authority, the INAO, and the Ministry of Agriculture appealed this annulment in a Paris court. This Paris court decided that the complaints from the four contesting chateaux were not “of such a nature as to annul the entire classification”. The Paris ruling recognized that there was no legal justification to annul the entire classification and that it was not in the public interest.

I spoke to a very happy Jean-Bernard Grenié of Chateau Angélus early this week. Monsieur Grenié told me that was very excited knowing that “order has followed disorder in Saint Emilion”. He pointed out the practical complications to me. "Nobody knew what to use on the labels for the 2006 vintage. The bottling will take place in early 2008. Printing of all the labels alone takes over two months!"
”We can’t stop everything because of four chateaux.” the co-owner of the Saint Emilion First Growth told me. “It is bad for the image of the appellation in France, in Europe and the entire world. I am very happy indeed; this situation was bad for everybody”.
I couldn't agree with him more.

Our Blog at number 7 in the top 100! All thanks to you!!
I have been asking you to vote for The BordeauxWineBlog.com. As many of you will Ronald with his two guysknow by now, wine blogs are being rated on a site called LocalWineEvents. Thanks to your support we are currently at place number 7 in the top 100!
The other day Margaret asked me why I wanted to reach a top position on this list so much? The honest answer is: It is a guy thing; why do some people climb mountains? Definitely not because of the view...
So this guy is asking you again to vote for him and help us into the top 3.

As promised, a much more informal picture of
Ronald with his two guys, Alexander and Roderick

So why should you help me?
The answer: Because I am a nice
guy. And a guy 's got to do what a guy's got to do...
Please vote for us

So, dear Wine Lover, I again ask you to vote for us.
Thanks very much for your help
!

Your guide: Ronald Rens, M.Sc.,Wine MasterWhat Ronald has been drinking this month...

The Best and the Worst

Outstandingly the best
:

A beautiful well aged Chateau Beychevelle 1989, a Fourth Classified Growth from Saint Julien from my own cellar.
We tasted this excellent wine at a dinner party we hosted at Chateau Coulon Laurensac in the presence of a Bordeaux wine trader and a Saint Emilion chateau owner, both with their spouses.
All present agreed that this was a delicious wine and a great value, considering that for the price of a First Growth 2005 you could buy a case of this excellent Beychevelle
.

Disappointingly the worst
:

A 2003 Escudo Rojo by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, a wine from Chili.
I slipped this wine in at a blind wine tasting dinner at our Chateau. It was a horizontal tasting of the vintage 2003.
We tasted the second wines of four Classified Growth from different appellations and the wine from Chili. The wine smelled like gaz (petrol) and unfortunately the taste was not much better.
It was the only wine that was correctly named by all tasters present, because it was so "different".

Our Wine Experience during Vinexpo 2007, Part 3
Florence Cathiard of Chateau Smith Haut LafitteVinexpo is the world leading wine event. Everybody who is anybody in the wine world shows up in Bordeaux. In my two previous Newsletters I wrote about the dinner at Chateau Mouton Rothschild and the "Dîner Millésimes de Collection"at Chateau Beau-Séjour Bécot.
"Everything has to be perfect for the Gala Dinner" announced Florence Cathiard, owner of Chateau Smith Haut-Lafitte. Because it was here at this Cru Classé of the Pesac-Léognan, that the 56th edition on the Fête de la Fleur was held. This gala celebrates the flowering of the vines and is one of the most prestigious dinner party's in France.
The 56th edition of this event took place at Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte.

Florence Cathiard, owner of Chateau Smith Haut-Lafitte welcomes us at the Fête de la Fleur

This black-tie event was also used to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.
Bordeaux at its best: Smith Haut Lafitte 2000The menu’s were engraved by Hermès on leather for the dinner in the vat room of the chateau. On the menu we found many regional products being used: caviar from the region, Pauillac lamb and “cannellées”, the cakes based on egg yokes. The wines were exceptional as well. For pre dinner drinks, there was a choice of 60 different Graves (both red and white). On the dinner they served the Smith Haut Lafitte 2000, Rauzan Ségla 1996, and the great First Growth Haut Brion 1998. For the dessert everybody enjoyed the Superior First Growth Chateau d’Yquem of the 1998 vintage. On the guest list we found the crème de la crème of Bordeaux but also celebrities like the Price Hendrik of Denmark and CSI actor Gary Dourdan.
And last but not least your faithful eyes and ears in Bordeaux: Ronald and Margaret of The Bordeaux Wine Experience…

As I told you before: everybody who is anybody in the wine world was at Smith Haut Lafitte. So we did some more celebrity spotting for you!

Which chateau used to carry this label?Wine trivia quiz
This month I again ask you to recognize a bottle from my own personal wine cellar. I am just showing a detail of the label. The question is: which chateau used to carry this label on its bottles?

You can find the answer on our website: Click here.

Last month's question
The correct answer to last month's question is: Chateau Petrus, and the appellation is Pomerol. Contrary to popular belief there are no Classified Growths in Pomerol.
