Ronald tasting Latour 2021 with Pierre-Henri Chabot

Latour is always imposing on the banks of the Gironde with its iconic tower. I tasted the Latour at the chateau with Pierre-Henri Chabot, the cellarmaster of this First Growth. Just driving up to the winery you see that everything is dedicated to quality here.

I asked Pierre-Henri about the quality of the Latour: “We feel absolutely no pressure on the quantity we produce. We can be as strict in our selections as we like. The sole focus is on the quality of the wines. And that is a privilege to be able to work like this.

As always, I taste the three wines of Latour and like always, we can see the deepness of the color increase from wine to wine.

Pauillac de Latour 2021 (16+ points)
[53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot]

Latour 2021

Latour 2021

A medium intense color. The nose is very expressive with loads of fruit. On the palate this is like sipping a fruit basket, but then beautiful. Good structure for a third wine. Nice tannic backbone. Not very long.

Les Forts de Latour 2021 (18- points)
[71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot]

Deeper color than the Pauillac showing more purple than red. Sample was rather closed on the nose and took its time to open up.

This second wine showed even more fruit than the Pauillac but went more towards black fruit. Way more complexity and nuances than the Pauillac. A strong good tannic structure which is the chateau’s signature.

This Les Forts de Latour turned out very successful. Well done!

Chateau Latour 2021 (19+ points)
[90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9,25% Merlot, 0,5% Cabernet Franc and 0,25% Petit Verdot]

Intense deep purple color. Slightly less intense than I remember from previous vintages. Strong tannic backbone that we expect from the powerhouse that is Latour. Loads of ripe, fresh (black) fruit without any signs of over extraction or over ripeness. Extreme length. One of the longest wines I have tasted in this vintage. Exemplary freshness and balance.
